"Happy Days."

This sad tale reminded me of my own "rain guage" episode. You have all read about the frigid conditions we had a few days ago when the temperature plummeted to nearly 20 degrees . Alas, I had neglected to bring in my rain guage which contained 2 1/2 inches of rain due to a three day spell of rain prior to this sad day. With horror I rushed out to my flower bed as soon as I had looked at my thermometer . Pulling it out of the wooden base (which my son Chuck had so kindly provided when the old plastic one met a sad end) I turned it up side down in hopes there would be a dribble left unfrozen. I rushed into the house and set it in a container in the sink noting that there seemed to be no cracks in the glass. My tale has a more happy ending as soon I could empty out the still frozen cone of ice and return the guage to the safe haven in the cabinet over my dryer where it will remain until next spring . When it will return to its proper service in my flower garden (which incidentally met a sadder fate than my lucky rain guage.) I know you will all send congratulations on hearing of this narrow escape from tragedy.

Love, Helen
